I går kom nyheten om at Jon Fosse blir tildelt Nobelprisen i litteratur “for sin nyskapende dramatikk og prosa, som gir en stemme til det usigelige”. Det er første gang noensinne at en forfatter som skriver på nynorsk mottar prisen.

Og i dag kunngjorde Nobel Instituttet at den iranske menneskerettighetsaktivisten Narges Mohammadi vant Nobels fredspris; “for sin kamp mot undertrykking av kvinner i Iran, og for alles menneskerettigheter og frihet”

Yesterday the Nobel Institute announced that Jon Fosse is awarded the Nobel prize in literature; “for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable”. This is the first time an author writing in nynorsk is awarded the prize.

And today the The Nobel Institute announced that the Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace prize; “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all”.

Congratulations to both of them!

Varying pastels of turqouise, peach, rosy-red, orange, subdued green, blue, pink and yellows are the colours adorning buildings in Plomari, Lesvos, where I spent my summer.

Den populariserte, typisfiserte versjonen av en gresk øy viser gjerne steinete klipper med strender, blått hav, hvitmalte hus med blå dører og vinduskarmer, som på Santorini. Popkulturelle fenomen som feks Mamma Mia,som ble filmet på Skopelos, opprettholder denne ideen om et gresk ferieparadis med joviale grekere, katter, og lokalbeboere som nærmest oppfører seg som om du var familie. Og noen ganger er dette faktisk ikke så langt unna sannheten, og Mamma Mia filmen er helt klart grei underholdning.

The typical, well known and popularized version of a greek island consists of bare cliffs, beaches, white plastered houses with bright blue doors and window frames,like Santorini. Pop culture phenomenons like Mamma Mia, which was filmed on Skopelos further established this idea of a greek island retreat, complete with easy going greeks, lots of cats, and local community that almost behaves as family. Sometimes this is also close to reality, and the Mamma Mia movie is for sure worth watching.

Sammenlignet med Lesvos er Santorini lokalisert lenger sørvest, i cycladene, og også Skopelos ligger lenger vest, nærmere det greske fastlandet. Lesvos er nær det tyrkiske fastlandet, og er en stor øy kjent for mange oliventrær, olivenolje-og ouzoproduksjon. Den typiske fargepaletten på bygninger er også som nevnt, mer variert og mettet. Klare farger, pastellfarger, og tradisjonell gresk mat, kanskje med noe inspirasjon fra østlig og persisk mattradisjon, sannsynligvis på grunn av den geografiske plasseringen nærmere Tyrkia.

Denne boken, Daphnis and Chloe blir regnet for å være den første neskrevne pastorale romansen, og handlingen foregår på Lesvos, med beskrivelser av Mytilene, øyas hovedstad. Denne historien og relaterte myter er inspirasjonskilde til en ballett og malerier av Marc Chagall, som feks dette.

However, in comparison to Lesvos, which is the island where I spend my vacations, Santorini is one of located more to the southwest, among the cyclades, Skopelos is located to the west of Lesvos and closer to the greek mainland. Lesvos is very close to Turkey and a large island known for its many olive trees, olive oil-and ouzo production, and the colour palette is, as mentioned much more varied and saturated. Brights and pastels, and the cuisine is traditional greek, but you will also find food a bit more inspired by eastern and persian culture, perhaps due to the geograpnhical location close to Turkey.

This book, Daphnis and Chloe, is concidered the first “pastoral romance”, and the narrative is located on Lesvos island with descriptions of Mytilene, the capitol of the island. Related myths and stories have also inspired a balley and paintings by Marc Chagall, like for instance this one.

Warm autumn sweater for your kid, and for you.

True to the fall season I am currently cuddling up on my couch and watching Only Murders in The Building, and I seriously identify the style Mabel Mora sports as quite similar to mine during my late teens to early twenties! And the relationship dynamics are so quirky and fun, complete with break-downs, bantering, needs for validation and so forth.

I have also been recommended The Bear as a bingeworthy series, a fictatious show about a chef, instead of a reality-show about food, for a change. Sounds fresh!
